New Membership

At Shoemaker, new members go through Recruitment in the Spring, and then New Membership in the Fall during their first semester in the house. New Membership includes many bonding activities, allowing each New Member Class to grow closer and make their mark on the house. Below, are some of the responsibilities required to become a member at Shoemaker Cooperative.

New Member Project

Each year, the incoming new members are given a home renovation project to complete before they can become active members. They must update a part of the house that needs to be changed in order to keep the house maintained and modernized. Some of these steps include creating a design, raising the funds for the materials, and coming together to bring the design to life. This project is a great bonding experience for the girls and helps our house to keep looking beautiful. It also allows each new member class to leave a lasting mark on the house.

Philanthropy

To better each new member as a volunteer and a citizen, each new member class participates in a community service (philanthropy) project as a pledge class. The pledge class chooses the project and completes it together during the Fall semester.

Girls are involved in many different volunteer activities such as Soles 4 Souls, Natalie's Second Chance, Hammer Down Hunger, PUDM, Blood Drives, and more!

Study Tables

Because academics are a priority at Shoemaker, there is scheduled time set aside for the new members' academics as they adapt to the house. This time enables them to catch up on their studies and helps promote good study habits.

At the end of the semester, new members have the opportunity to be recognized for their academic achievements.

Thanksgiving Dinner

It has become a tradition that each new member class prepares a Thanksgiving dinner for Shoes and their guests before Thanksgiving Break.

Each new member class will design and send invitations to each member's household, decide dishes to prepare, and host the event.
